Big Mountain Imaging finds peak performance in VUTEk UltraVu presses

August 30, 2002 - Big Mountain Imaging set itself lofty ambitions when it named the company after Everest and Kilimanjaro, the largest mountain in the world and the largest mountain in Africa respectively. It also takes its inspiration from William Blake who once wrote, ‘Great things are done when men and mountains meet.’

Big Mountain Imaging puts it more simply with its marketing slogan, “We Print Big Stuff!” And what is says, it does. Its banners, billboards and murals cover everything from the Caesar’s Palace casino in Atlantic City to the boxing ring arena at Madison Square Garden.

For “Big Stuff” it needs big machines. Since the company launched three years ago it has operated nothing other than VUTEk large format inkjet printers.

Its latest investments have only recently come on stream – a four-color VUTEk UltraVuTM 5300 and a eight-color VUTEk UltraVuTM 2360, which have been added to its existing UltraVuTM 5300 printers.

Fred Ciolorito, President, Big Mountain Imaging says, ‘We called the company Big Mountain Imaging because we wanted to think outside the box. We feel we are not an ordinary banner printing company, but one that’s bigger and better than most other companies.’

Big Mountain looked at all products available on the market, but according to Fred, following a visit to its headquarters in Meredith, New Hampshire, USA, it was VUTEk that came out ahead again.

Fred continues, ‘We made our decision primarily on the quality of output from the VUTEk printers. But importantly, we also knew that we would get superb support and service from VUTEk, as experienced with our first machine installed three years ago.’

Although Big Mountain Imaging’s principal partners have been in business for more than 70 years, most of that time was spent buying print media. It only took the plunge into printing its own material three years ago, when it saw a gap in the market for a quality service.

Since then it has set up a purpose built 30,000 square foot operation in Philadelphia, PA, designed to be sufficiently large enough to lay large poster sections side-by-side, for checking print quality. Employing over 25 members of staff, Big Mountain Imaging is a company with its eyes firmly on the future.

More than twenty-five percent of the work handled by Big Mountain Imaging is trade work from silk screen printers or digital print operations, without the capacity to handle what the VUTEk printers can produce.

Fred says, ‘We are getting more and more calls for 30 sheet posters and high resolution applications on the really big stuff. There is also a wider range of fabrics to print on and the color capability of the VUTEk’s is really handy when we have to print special colors or corporate identities.’

The VUTEk UltraVu 2360 is a two-meter digital inkjet printer providing a range of high quality, high speed printing options in four-, six- and eight-color models. It features 720dpi resolution (360dpi addressable) and the eight-color printer allows the user to easily convert from super fast –4™ color printing to eight-color photo quality printing. It can produce output for indoor or outdoor use and is the ideal printer for creating high quality images with high production values.

The VUTEk UltraVu 5300 is a five-meter wide printer designed for the photo realistic print quality on virtually hundreds of substrates. The UltraVu 5300 features 300dpi resolution and four-color printing.
